On October 25th, IBM SmartCamp came to South Africa for the first time, hosting a Kickstart event in Cape Town where four startup finalists competed with their solutions.
The winner of the day was Kenyan mobile micro credit firm Mobile Decisioning (MoDe). MoDe is a provider of micro and nano credit products to prepaid customers of mobile telcos and other utilities. They currently have operations in Africa and plans to expand to other emerging markets. MoDe is focused on providing its services to consumers primarily at the bottom of the economic pyramid, where consumers often don’t have convenient access to much needed credit to top up their utility bills. The company now has almost 60 employees, with a presence in five countries. Its product has already been used by millions across the continent.
The Cape Town SmartCamp event was picked up by CNBC Africa which highlighted the work that IBM is doing with entrepreneurs worldwide in a news segment. Click the image below to watch the news clip.
